What is chiropractic and how does it work?

Our nervous system controls every function in our body. It is how we perceive and respond to the world around us. It helps our body adapt to the countless physical, chemical, and emotional changes we experience on a daily basis. When the spine shifts (or subluxates), it can compromise the nervous system, interfering with its ability to perceive, regulate, adapt and respond. Over time, this leads a decline in physical comfort, emotional stability, and overall well-being. Rather than chasing the symptoms, chiropractors focus on the underlying cause of the issue, the neuro-spinal relationship, restoring normal function and allowing the body to heal from the inside out.

Who needs chiropractic care? (Everyone!)

Pediatric Care:

Since the nervous system controls every function in the body, including development and healing, shouldn’t we make sure that a child’s nervous system is working properly? Birth is the first physical, chemical and emotional stressor that we all experience in life and the spine is the most common place in the body that can interfere with the nervous system. Chiropractic care is an amazing way for parents to help their child heal naturally, especially from chronic childhood illnesses that are being treated with potentially hazardous medications.

Research from chiropractors throughout the world shows that children can benefit from chiropractic care, even if they already have a health challenge. Think about all of the children with ear infections, colic, asthma, acid reflux, ADHD, developmental delay, migraines, torticollis, and other problems. If their spine is putting pressure on their nervous system and interfering with their body’s normal functioning, then chiropractic can help them!

No health challenges? No problem! Chiropractic is a great way to keep the body functioning at a high level to prevent problems from developing in the first place.

Prenatal Care:

During pregnancy a woman’s body undergoes dramatic changes, both structurally, chemically (hormones), and emotionally. Chiropractic can help make pregnancy more comfortable, more enjoyable, and prepare the body for an easier, safer birth.

These dramatic changes during pregnancy (increased weight gain, change in posture, and hormones which relax stabilizing ligaments) are vital for growth and arrival of baby, but they can also interfere with other areas of life. Common secondary conditions from this shift include aches and pain (low back, sciatica, pubic bone, tailbone, etc.), digestive disorders (reflux, heartburn, constipation, etc.), overall wellness (fatigue, sleep, emotional swings, etc.) and even disruptions of normal birth (baby’s position, onset or progression of birth).

Chiropractic care is a gentle, non-invasive approach to correcting and stabilizing the spine and pelvis. Completely safe throughout pregnancy, chiropractic care helps the body work better and ultimately, improve quality of life and potentially birth outcomes.  Dr. Amanda has countless patients tell her how chiropractic has made their pregnancy more enjoyable and their birth shorter and easier.

After baby arrives, chiropractic is utilized to help the body recover and adapt to the new physical and emotional challenges of motherhood.  Most of our moms also get their baby checked to determine if chiropractic can help with development and challenges like breastfeeding, digestion, comfort, sleep and immune function.

The ICPA website is a good resource filled with research and articles that further explain the important role chiropractic plays in prenatal care. Dr. Amanda is Webster-technique certified and has extensive training and clinical experience working with pregnant women.

Adults:

There are many reasons people choose to visit a chiropractor. Two main reasons why they visit this practice are:

They are sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Most people come to Healthy Beginnings because they have some kind of health challenge and are seeking an alternative to drugs or surgery. While many people are aware of using chiropractic for neck pain, back pain, sciatica, migraines, and headaches, many people come for others challenges, like sleeping problems, digestive disorders, anxiety, high blood pressure, infertility, fibromyalgia, menstrual pain and even autoimmune conditions. If you fall into this group, then chiropractic may be a great option! By adjusting the spine, chiropractors help restore normal nervous system function so the body can regulate and heal itself. At our office, we’ve had many practice members see great changes in various aspects of their health following chiropractic adjustments.

They are healthy and want to stay healthy.

Your nervous system controls everything function of the body. Making sure it is working without interference from the spine is very important. Without normal nervous system function, your body cannot work properly. That means your immune system, digestive system, musculoskeletal system, and every other system will be affected. Many adults use chiropractic care as a safe and natural approach to keeping their nervous system functioning properly so they can be as healthy as possible!

Preconception:

Sadly, we are living in a time that our kids have a shorter life expectancy than we do. They are dealing with more adult onset diseases and cancer, autoimmune issues and diabetes than ever before. Learning to be healthy as an adult is hard enough – eating healthy, working on gratitude, moving your body – so imagine how difficult it is to get a child to do the same!

Dr. Amanda’s goal is to teach the habits to the parents prior to conception, so that these habits not only stick and create better health in mom and dad, but also the health of the baby will be significantly improved as well! Imagine if you could slow or even stop potential health issues in your children by taking care of yourself first. That’s her focus, her passion, and her why. Empowering healthy families from fertility forward!

Our approach:

When there are so many chiropractors to chose from, why do families travel across Central Florida to visit this practice?

Most offices, both medical and chiropractic, focus on alleviating symptoms and helping people feel better. They usually do a good job, but only focusing on reducing symptoms without addressing the root cause can lead to them coming back later, often times worse than before. We focus on correcting, stabilizing, and maintaining the normal function of the spine and nervous system to improve overall well-being for the long-term.

Dr. Amanda has additional training and certification in the chiropractic care of pregnant women and children of all ages. That’s why she the preferred chiropractor for many pediatricians, obstetricians, midwives, doulas, and providers throughout Hillsborough County. She utilizes gentle, safe, and effective techniques ideally suited for expectant moms and young children.
