How to Prepare for a Maternity Photoshoot! - By: Angelina Mitschke

Pregnancy is an extraordinary, beautiful, and exciting time in a woman’s life, and a maternity photo shoot is the perfect way to capture the beauty of the pregnant body and create memories for a lifetime. As pregnancy progresses though, many changes that the body goes through can lead to discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility. Chiropractic care can help alleviate some of these pains, maintain spinal health, and prepare the body for a safe and healthy pregnancy.

If you are receiving chiropractic care during your pregnancy and are planning a maternity photo session, there are few things you can do so you are fully prepared and comfortable during the shoot.

Consult with your Chiropractor

Before scheduling your maternity photo session, discuss your plans with your chiropractor. They will be able to help you understand how your body may be affected by the photoshoot, for example through prolonged standing, and can recommend precautions or modifications that may be necessary. Getting an adjustment before the session will also help reduce any pain and increase range of motion, and overall comfort.

Schedule your photoshoot for the right time

Pregnancy can be unpredictable and every body is different so it is important that you schedule your session for a time that is right for you. Generally, maternity pictures are taken between 28 and 32 weeks, when the belly is round and prominent but mom is still comfortable enough to move around easily.

Choose the right photographer

When choosing a photographer, there are several factors to consider: services offered, style, and price to just mention a few. It is important to choose a photographer that is experienced in maternity photography to ensure that they understand the unique needs of a pregnant woman and also know how to pose and light you in a flattering way. You also want to make sure that you feel comfortable around your photographer. A relaxed and friendly environment will help make the session a success.

Studio vs. Outdoor Session

Both locations have their advantages so it will depend on your vision for your maternity images. When deciding on whether to do a studio or an outdoor session, keep in mind that photography studios offer amenities such as an AC, bathroom, and couches / chairs that can help you feel more comfortable. If you choose an outdoor session, make sure that the location is easily accessible and that you bring water to stay hydrated especially during the hot summer months in Florida.

Clothing and Hair & Make-up

Some photographers offer a client closet and hair & make-up services to ensure you look and feel your best so be sure to check with your photographer first. If they don’t offer any of this, communicate with your photographer as to what style and colors will work best and if they have any recommendations for a hair and make-up artist. This will help make sure that your outfit will fit into the overall vision and style you chose for your maternity images.
